繁欽引鳳闕古歌

三輔黃圖

長安城西有雙闕。上有雙銅雀。一鳴五穀成。再鳴五穀熟。An ancient song concerning the two towers that had a pair of bronze peacocks on the west of Chang An city.

朝邑俗諺

元和郡縣圖志

苦泉羊。洛水漿。The water in a spring in Zhao Yi County tastes salty and bitter, but once the sheep drink that water, the milk that they produce tastes like ambrosia.

丹州白室。胡頭漢舌。A folk saying about Dan Zhou residents, who speak only Chinese, despite the fact that theirethnic background is not Han.

襄陽無西。There is no west end for Xiang Yang County, meaning that the borderline between Xiang Yang and another county is not distinct.

There is no east end to the Ji County, meaning that the borderline between Ji and another county is not distinct.

欲拔貧。詣徐聞。

If one wants to escape poverty, one should go to Xu Wen county in search of wealth.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

匈奴為祁連焉支二山歌

十道志逸文

失我焉支山。令我婦女無顏色。失我祁連山。

使我六畜不蕃息。Two folk songs sung by the Xiong Nu tribe concerning their loss of two mountainous areas to the Han empire. The words are: Losing the Yan Zhi mountain left our women to have no lipsticks to use (there were certain plants used as the material for lipsticks in that mountain). Losing Qi Lian mountain left us with no good place for animal grazing.

紇真山頭有神井。入地千尺絕骨冷。

There is a pine well on the top of He Zhen mountain. However, the water there is so cold that itchills to the bones.

鄴人金鳳舊歌

鳳陽門內天一半。上有金鳳飛相喚。欲去不去著鎖絆。There are two gold pheonixes on the Fong Yang gate. One has flown to the Zhang River, and the other one is fastened by a lock.

磁州鼓山俗語

南鼓北鼓。相去十五。

There are two rock drums on the Drum mountain of Ci Zhou. One in the north, the other in the south.

清豐故老傳語

金堤頭。上有秦女樓。At the source of the Jin Ti River, there is a Qin Women’s tower.

二陸人洛。三張減價。

If those two Mr. Lu’s should come to Luo (place name), then those three Zhang brothers would not appear as outstanding in their literary work.

There is a rock drum on Yan Moutnain. When one plays it, it is as though there are soldiers marching around.

東石從西。乞子將歸。There are two rocks facing each other across the Qing Yi River. It is where one may pray for begetting a son.

When the rock drum is being played, it sounds as though there is an army.

An emperor will come out of that market on the river. A folk saying in Chang Shui County.

腹如三京灣。When one can really eat, one is said as to have a belly like the San Jing Bay.

南鄭旱山諺

牛頭戴。旱山晦。家中乾穀莫相貸。

A folk saying concerning the Han mountain in Nan Zheng county. It says that when there are clouds on that mountain, one should not take out one’s dry grains to lend to people, asrain will come with the cloud.

譬春之陽。如冬之日。耕者讓畔。百姓豐溢。惟我胡父。

恩惠難置。

A song sung by people of Xiang Yang praising Hu Lei in doing a good job governing their county. His major contribution was the construction of dykes.

A folk saying concerning the good animals raised in Wei Zhou.

石門俗語

經大庾。則清穢之氣分。飲石門。則緇素之質變。

If one goes past Da Yu, then one’s bad temperament departs from one. When one drinks water from Shi Men’s Greedy Spring, then one becomes not-greedy.

人中有張飛。馬中有玉追。

Among men, there is the unusual man Zhang Fei, and among horses, there is his unusual horse named Yu Zhui.

烏鵲歌

新定九域志逸文

南山有鳥。北山張羅。鳥自高飛。羅當奈何。

烏鵲雙飛。不樂鳳凰。妾是庶人。不樂宋王。

A song sung by the wife of a servant of Prince Kang of the Song dynasty, expressing her desirenot to marry him. Being attracted to her, Prince Kang wanted to take her. He killed her husband, but then she would not follow the prince’s will. She hung herself.

When these golden geese howl up on Golden Goose Mountain, the Shen family begins to be prosperous.

有風七里。無風七十里。When there is tail wind, the boat goes fast, and when there is head wind, the boat is ten times slower than when there is tail wind.

紹興邦人舊語

晴禹祠。雨龍瑞。Words said by people of Shao Xing about their two scenic spots. When it is a clear day, one should go to the Yu temple. When it is rainy, one should go to Long Rei temple.

夏禹所踐刻此壁。

Words referring to the content of the mural in Tian Lao mountain. The mural was about places and things that Yu, an ancient saint good at hydraulic engineering, had done.

The scenic spot in the sky is Cloud Dwelling Mountain, and the scenic spot on the ground is Gui Zong temple.

Words said about a scenic spot in Jiang Zhou. The words are: the young girl marries Mr. Peng(the name of the scenic spot is Peng Lang Rock).

Those evil subjects of the emperor all stayed put and ignored the emperor’s call for help. Only the Governor of Qian Zhou went to the emperor’s assistance.

天雷飛石頭。一夜成汀州。五十年內興公侯。

With one night of thunder and rain, a huge pile of rocks accumulated on the river. In fifty years, someone royal will arise.

Students in the entire school in Hai Ling have the family names of Xu, Zhou and Zha.

元豐濟濟稱多士。南郡堂堂有三李。萬鍾於我何加焉。一瓢樂在其中矣。

Words said by people of Wang Ling about three local men who all had the family name Li, two of them being brothers. They all resigned from their government posts. The words praise them for not being greedy about the money.

If one could safely sail through the Gu Niou Beach, one could write home and report their safe arrival to their final destination without actually reaching it.

Words said by people of Nan En concerning their good official Chen Fong, who had no bad practices that bothered the general population.

石門之水清且清。晉吏一歃千古榮。爭如李公投杯盟。

江流洶洶盃停停。A song sung by people of Guang Dong about one of their officials, Li Lun who swore that he would be a good official by throwing his cup into a big river with fast-flowing water. But the cup remained in front of him without being carried away by the water.
